Lviv to Kyiv by road via Rivne and Zhytomyr
From the old town of Lviv to the capital. About 600 km across western and northern Ukraine: from Lviv through Brody and Dubno to Rivne, then east through Novohrad-Volynskyi and Zhytomyr to Kyiv. The road is mostly flat (100–350 m above sea level) and takes about 8–9 hours by bus, a little less by car.
The route. Lviv – Zadviria – Brody area – Verba – Rivne – Velyki Mezhyrichi – Zviahel (Novohrad-Volynskyi) – Pulyny – Zhytomyr area – Brusyliv – Kyiv.
On the way. Lviv’s Rynok Square and old town are a UNESCO World Heritage site. Zadviria, near Lviv, is the site of the 1920 battle of Zadwórze, which Poles call the “Polish Thermopylae”. Zviahel (Novohrad-Volynskyi) is the birthplace of the poet Lesya Ukrainka, and her house is a museum. Zhytomyr, on the river Teteriv, has the Cathedral of the Transfiguration. The last stage runs through the forests and fields of the Kyiv region to the Dnipro.
Good to know. It is a very long single day on a bus: plan breaks. In winter fog and snow can slow the route.
