Through the heart of Manhattan. About 4.6 km north on Sixth Avenue (the Avenue of the Americas), from Greenwich Village to Times Square. About an hour on foot, a few minutes by car in light traffic.

On the way. Greenwich Village, with its brick houses and the Jefferson Market Library, a 19th-century Gothic Revival courthouse. The old department stores of the “Ladies’ Mile” in Chelsea. Herald Square with Macy’s, which calls itself the world’s largest store. Bryant Park behind the New York Public Library, a green square between the skyscrapers; in winter it has a skating rink and a Christmas market. And Times Square, named after the New York Times, which moved there in 1904, and the place of the New Year’s Eve ball drop.

Good to know. Manhattan’s avenues run north–south and the streets east–west; the numbers of the streets show how far north you are. The side-walks are crowded from noon on, and Times Square is loud and very busy in the evening.
